After a hiatus following the release of Be the Cowboy, Mitski returned with the album Laurel Hell (2022), which explored themes of fame, performance, and personal struggle. Her 2023 album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We further expanded her sound, incorporating orchestral and folk influences.
