Many people think about what they put in their bodies, but don’t realize that what we put on our bodies can also be a source of chemical exposure. Depending on how textiles are manufactured, clothing can involve dyes, finishing agents, plasticizers, PFAS, phthalates, and other chemical treatments. Clothing can sit directly against our bodies for hours, often while we’re warm or sweating. Some chemicals present in textiles can migrate out of the fabric and, depending on the chemical, may be absorbed through the skin. I’m especially conscious about underwear and anything touching intimate areas because of the prolonged, close contact. I want to reduce unnecessary exposures where I realistically can.
