The Inner Light episode (flute and all) also gave him something very positive. When he first met Riker, he told Riker that one of his duties was to help project a benevolent, kind public persona of Captain Picard, while actually keeping kids away from him. After The Inner Light, he took with him the long, happy, married life “memories”, complete with ”memories” of his children, whom he loved. He was never again so awkward and ill at ease with children. (One of my top 3 favorite episodes.)
