@dr.adam.dell: There are many reasons why we don't typically hold someone's gaze: it's uncomfortable, we're busy, it might demand something of us further that we don't want to give, or we may not want to be known. It may also be that technology culture has trained us to keep our eyes on our screens and not to look at each other. Perhaps we as a society have lost the art of really looking at each other. Communication can occur without words and so much can be said without ever saying a word. When you meet someone's eyes there is a sense of warmth, respect and dignity being offered. It communicates to another that they're worth your attention, even if it's only for a moment. Similarly, it's a form of humility. If you avoid the opportunity to look at another, you communicate that your time, hustle, or mindspace is more important than them. Even more so, looking at someone demonstrates to the person that they matter. Their mere humanity matters. There is a sense of vulnerability when you look at someone. Your face may tell a story. You can read another's story. You can see if they are kind, troubled, or having a good day or a hard time. Meeting the gaze of another shortens the distance between two people. It's a form of connection that only has upside for both sets of eyes.
