The first year is challenging. I highly recommend retiring in the Spring winter if you are in a Northern area. It really helps you transition from a busy work life by having so may more options with the warm weather.

I’m retired at 56 and keep getting the “what do you do all day” question. It’s annoying

I’m into my second year of retirement and it’s been the hardest period of my life. Harder than when my parents died of cancer when I was a teenager.

I was a financial exec for 45 years and retired a month ago. It’s weird but I feel like I flipped a switch and I was done with corporate life. I think 6 years WFH helped a lot and we moved to a resort community with a lot to do. I am in heaven and have never slept better

I retired - for the 2nd time - end November 2025, at 63. I was ready… and have zero regrets… and I’m finding I have more things to do than time to do it. I’m fortunate in that a) pretty good relationship with my wife of 38 years (who was stay at home mom for last 16 years and considers herself ‘retired’ too and just about to hit 60) and b) two young adult children who both have good jobs and both still live at home. So loads happening and I’m very happy‘retired’. Might be different if we were just the 2 of us…

It’s very different reading about retirement than experiencing it. My advice would be to try to understand your position in the reality of the world, starting at the size of a gnat. Then, if you don’t have one, acquire an interest or a hobby in creative endeavours. You might get frustrated, but it will keep boredom away.

I love retirement 3 months in, but I can tell that my wife is annoyed that I’m around all the time and she doesn’t have the house to herself any more.

I made it my life goal to retire early - planned to work 18 more months- laid off last week. No desire- and gratefully, no need- to get another full time job. But as much as I dreamed of this its still quite a shock to the system. Wish we talked about it more.

I am about 18 mos in and it's getting easier. I think the hardest part is "justifying" what you do all day to the working crowd. They don't get how you can fill your day.
