@24hourlibrary: Did you know there is a secret code in many public libraries? As a librarian, do I recommend this practice? No. Ultimately, it’s still a defacement of public property. But am I still kind of delighted when I come across it? Yes. As a piece of historical record, it’s a fascinating look into one individual’s reading habits. Old enough collections can allow you to trace a reader’s whole history, sometimes even with a dated timeline. Occasionally you’ll find books with multiple markings, signifying that the book passed through several readers’ hands — readers who knew, next time they browsed at the library, they could check for their unique mark and see they’ve already read the book that caught their eye this visit. And if you’re someone who prefers to not keep a record of your checkouts through the integrated library system and your library account (which I recommend — the existence of it means it’s available to obtain by court order and your reading is nobody’s business but your own), this is a great reader solution. But as the librarian, I say, “Tsk tsk!”

it's time to bring back the cards. I loved checking out a book and seeing who'd read it before me. or my own name five times. 😂

A patron once told me that her husband initialed the back of every book he read from the library. He passed away some years ago, but she said she loves when she checks out books and still finds his initials from time to time.

Just … write it down ? 😭 That’s how I keep track of the books I’ve read

Omg it drives me insane when patrons feel the need to mark up books. Write them down on your own paper. Keep a notebook. Something. Anything.

You just need to promote apps like Goodreads or Storygraph where people can keep track of books they have read

one of our readers was caught after years of leaving her initials. She tried saying that she didn't do it, but it was a brand new book & she was the first and only person to check the book out when we found it. 💜💜

I love that! Old school Goodreads or other apps. I was looking at the different heights and lengths of the books!

Why can’t people just keep a reading journal ? Notebooks are like $1

My library has a "star in a circle" reader and an "S" reader. Do they not realize we have multiple copies of a book?

I volunteer at a thrift for books and many of our regulars treat it like a library and do the same exact thing! A lot of the time it’s their initials on the first page. Some of our books have been circulating throughout the store for so long there’s a list of initials showing everyone who’s read it

Exactly why I signed up for Goodreads. When you read 100+ books a year it’s impossible to remember which (for example) Ed McBain or Rex Stout books you’ve read.

😭 I noticed that some of the spines stuck out like a new book and some curve in towards the book, is this just because they are well read?

I love using Libby because of this! I have been reading all the Murder She Wrote books and seeing the lil flag that I’ve already read it is invaluable. Super easy when making my holds

Tbh I love this. So long as it doesn’t interfere with the words, it’s like a little treasure hunt to find it. And I’m the type that never writes in their own books

It’s not hard to use an app like Story Graph instead of defacing books meant for an entire community to share. 🤦♀️I clearly don’t have the patience to be a librarian. 😂

I actively encourage patrons to do this. It adds to the life story of that artifact. I love it!

In the UK your library will tell you if you’ve read it before when they scan it before stamping

Some libraries will stick a piece of paper in the back (or front) of all their books so that people can mark or initial that rather than the book itself. More libraries should do that.
