A Fourier series is a mathematical technique that represents a complex periodic signal as a sum of simple sine and cosine waves. Developed by the French mathematician Joseph Fourier, this idea shows that even complicated repeating patterns can be broken down into a collection of harmonics with different frequencies and amplitudes. Fourier series play a central role in signal processing, acoustics, electrical engineering, and mathematics, allowing scientists and engineers to analyze everything from musical sounds to radio transmissions. By studying the individual frequency components of a signal, it becomes much easier to understand, manipulate, and reconstruct periodic phenomena. A sawtooth wave is one of the most famous examples used to demonstrate Fourier series. This waveform rises steadily and then drops sharply before repeating, creating its distinctive saw-like appearance. Although the sawtooth wave contains sharp corners and discontinuities, a Fourier series can approximate it by adding together an infinite sequence of sine waves whose amplitudes decrease in proportion to their harmonic number. As more harmonics are included, the approximation becomes increasingly accurate, revealing how simple trigonometric functions can recreate complex waveforms. Sawtooth waves are widely used in audio synthesis, physics, electronics, and waveform analysis, making them a classic example of the power and elegance of Fourier series.
