And then, assuming it was what the author wants, you can redeem this character. He would routinely find himself with negative consequences for these exact traits, maybe even fall victim to similar actions, and slowly realizing that he's the problem. He would then do things opposite to his previous actions or at minimum putting more good out in the world than they previously put in bad. The main thing is being punished specifically for the action. In the case of Rudeus this means the lusting for children. He's never truly punished for it. He goes through pain and heartache for OTHER stuff which is where his character development goes, but never towards his BIGGEST FLAW. The attraction to minors.
