SOS. The SOS signal is probably the most famous emergency message in history, yet its meaning is often misunderstood. It does not stand for Save Our Souls or Save Our Ship. Its origin is purely technical. In 1906, during the International Radiotelegraph Convention in Berlin, SOS was adopted as the international distress signal because, in Morse code, it is exceptionally simple and unmistakable: ··· ––– ··· Three dots, three dashes, three dots. It was much easier to recognize through radio interference than the previous distress signal, CQD, which was used primarily by the Marconi Company. The first documented use of SOS dates back to 1909, but it became world-famous in 1912 during the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The ship’s radio operators transmitted both CQD and SOS, helping establish SOS as the global standard for distress communications. One final curiosity: SOS is not actually a word. In Morse telegraphy, it is transmitted as a single continuous sequence, without pauses between the letters, making it instantly recognizable as a distress signal. #MorseCode #SOS #RadioHistory #Telegraphy #CommunicationHistory
