I've been able to harmonize as long as I can remember. I hear all three parts in my head at all times. people ask me to help them hear harmonies and im like idk what to tell you. lol

I agree it's definitely a gift. I've been able to harmonize from very young without any training, I can just hear it. in fact I hear it to he point that I will be singing a song a capella and realize that I'm singing the harmony without the melody even being there.

Not true. It is a definite gift. I can teach my vocal students lines to memorize but it’s the innate ability to do it without guidance that is the real gift.

While I'm sure it can be trained, it's not at all true that it's not also an innate talent/a gift. Those of us who've been able to do it since we were kids can do it spontaneously to music we've never ever heard before, without ever having heard a harmony as we've never even heard the piece before – which means we need an innate musical understanding of the chords and of what notes do and do not harmonise within each chord. Making your own harmonies from scratch from a young age is fundamentally different to learning to sing a pre-written harmony part. Both are complementary, but they are different skills. For instance you say three notes up or down, but that's not going to work for all chords. for instance if you're melody is on the root of the chord then the harmony below will be FOUR down (the fifth) or three up. And there's a big difference between major and minor thirds as well. Some of us do this effortlessly by ear.

It’s absolutely an inherent, natural talent. I’ve been harmonizing since I was a toddler. For a lot of people, you either hear it or don’t and it can’t always be learned.

coming from a family if singers and being autistic, I harmonized with the phones dialtone. all I ever do is harmonies for anything I hear.

Harmonizing is like a vocal stim for me. I would daydream about being a background singer just for the pleasure of finding an amazing harmony. I have comfort live BGV arrangements 🤣

For a long time, harmony has been my default state. Don’t get me wrong… I LOVE singing lead, but if there’s any occasion where I’m not, I’m busting out harmonies. And I know it feels like magic to those who aren’t yet able to do that. Good encouragement to spend time building that muscle.

Yeap! I grew up in church and also had a big family choir and grew up singing in it. I learned how to harmonize at an early age. I love harmonizing!🥰

Number 2 isn’t true in my case. My brothers and sisters and I were in choir but only 2 of us can harmonize. We had to learn how to harmonize outside of a choral setting. It’s a skill learned

I can actually learn a new song, I don’t know, easier when I have to sing the harmony part for it. It’s weird 😂 I do believe harmonizing is a learned skill and exposure is key but, it has to go hand in hand with a natural talent to hear the melody and sing on pitch or the harmony will never come.

My mother sang alto in church, so from the time I was born I’ve always heard the harmonies. When I sing with the radio I have to think about it to sing the melody.

My brother and I grew up in the exact same house. Both of our parents musicians, both growing up around harmony. In fact, he grew up around it more than I did. He has a difficult time finding harmony where 4 me-it just comes naturally. Why is that?

grew up listening to and singing multi vocal songs (barbie and disney!!) with my 3 younger siblings, pls tell me why only my younger sister cannot harmonize on her own when i and our younger brothers can so easily without particular training🥹🥹 like fr she can only sing the melody ever, unless she actually practices the piece (as an alto)
