i'm the yearbook advisor at our high school. since 1988, the last page of every yearbook has been a paid ad with the same one line on it. no name, no logo. thirty-eight years. nobody knew who bought it. this march we found out, and the senior class has not been normal since. the ad says: "class of 1988 — someone is proud of you." the next year it said 1989. then 1990. that's the whole page. same spot every year, the cheapest ad in the book. every march a cash envelope shows up in the front office with the exact amount and a slip with the year on it. the advisor before me told me on day one: don't try to find out. the kids have theories every year. a rich alum. the principal. a teacher who lost a kid. the seniors once ran an investigation with a corkboard and string. nowhere. this march, no envelope. i'd decided to pay for it myself so the streak wouldn't break. then margie knocked on my door. margie has run the lunch line since 1988. she knows every kid's name and which ones aren't eating. she said: "sorry it's late. i'm retiring in june. i wanted to make sure i got the last one in." her first year here, a senior told her nobody was coming to his graduation. she bought the page that spring so every kid crossing that stage could open the back of the book and find one person who was. thirty-eight classes. nine thousand kids. a cafeteria paycheck. never told a soul. a senior was in the office when she dropped it off. the class of 2026 took a vote. they bought the last page this year and moved it to the front. it says: "margie — someone is proud of you. it's all of us." the seniors put up a little page on aSim where alumni from every class since 1988 post what they went on to do, addressed to her. two thousand posts. she's reading every one at the lunch counter. if you graduated between 1988 and now, comment your year. she'd want you to know someone's proud of you too. #asim #yearbook #lunchlady #classof2026 #someoneisproudofyou
