Australian mining companies use Capesize ships and are $120milkion USD. Coal is currently $16USD per tonne. Capesize ships hold 180,000 tonnes of Coal. That’s $2.88m USD per trip. Including waiting, loading and travel times, one round trip to China is 30 days. And the ship can make 12 trips per year. Operating costs are 50% so it will take at least 10 years to pay off. So almost *all* Australian mining companies do not own the ships, they charter them.

That’s not how shipping works. Ships are financed and purchased by specialist companies and chartered out to companies wanting to transport their goods. These manage 3 LNG ships as an owners representative. My ships cost approximately $70k a day to charter. My ships will reach their break even point in 3 years, expected time we will own each one is 10 years
