In the Muromachi period, people ate something called uzura mochi, which was quite different from today’s version. Instead of sweet red bean paste, the filling was savory. As sugar became more widely available, red bean paste began to be sweetened. Daifuku mochi means “great fortune,” symbolizing good luck and prosperity.
