Among the many unexplained entities in Deltarune, few are as strange and potentially important as the creature commonly known as FRIEND, whose internal game-file names include "IMAGE_FRIEND" and "DEVICE_FRIEND". Unlike characters such as Kris, Susie, Ralsei, or Spamton, FRIEND has almost no explicit dialogue or confirmed identity. Instead, it appears repeatedly in places where the player is not necessarily expected to notice it: hidden corners, dark rooms, minigames, secret areas, and brief cutscenes. This makes FRIEND less like a conventional character and more like a recurring visual anomaly embedded throughout Deltarune. The mystery becomes more interesting when its appearances are compared with Undertale, particularly Flowey, the Amalgamates, and the game's recurring ideas about observation, identity, and the boundary between the player and the fictional world. FRIEND's earliest known appearance is in Chapter 2, inside Queen's Mansion. If the player returns to a particular area of the basement after triggering the door, a strange smiling face briefly appears in the darkness. It is easy to miss. The face has a black background, a crooked enormous smile, and two mismatched eyes: one pink and one yellow. At this point, there is no explanation for what the player has seen. Later, however, the same entity becomes increasingly recognizable. During the beginning of Chapter 3, while Ralsei explains the nature of Dark Worlds, a large feline-looking creature with the same distinctive face briefly appears. Its body is bizarre: it has multiple legs, pointy ears, and even smaller cat-like silhouettes formed by the empty spaces between its limbs. This immediately establishes that the smiling face is not simply a graphical joke. There appears to be a physical creature behind it. The design creates an especially strong connection to Undertale. The most obvious comparison is Endogeny, one of the Amalgamates found in the True Lab. Endogeny is essentially a gigantic, distorted dog-like mass with multiple legs and an unusual body structure. FRIEND's Chapter 3 depiction resembles this basic silhouette, except that it is feline rather than canine. This is significant because the Amalgamates in Undertale are themselves creatures created through unnatural combinations of monsters, determination, and scientific experimentation. FRIEND is not confirmed to be an Amalgamate or to have the same origin, but Toby Fox deliberately using a visually similar structure is difficult to ignore. The resemblance places FRIEND within the visual language of Undertale's most disturbing and unnatural creatures. There is another important Undertale parallel: Flowey. Flowey is one of the first characters in Undertale to demonstrate that something can exist outside the player's expected understanding of the world. He watches the player, remembers things that others cannot, appears in unexpected locations, and repeatedly breaks the assumptions established by the normal game world. FRIEND similarly behaves like an observer or hidden presence. It appears when the player is exploring areas that seem irrelevant, often from darkness or inaccessible locations, and disappears before it can be properly understood. This does not prove that FRIEND is another Flowey, but the narrative function is comparable: both create the feeling that the world contains something watching from outside the ordinary boundaries of the story. FRIEND's relationship with Kris is therefore particularly interesting. Deltarune constantly emphasizes the distinction between Kris and the player. Kris is controlled by the red SOUL, yet Kris can also remove the SOUL and act independently. The player is therefore not simply identical to the protagonist. FRIEND's strange appearances fit naturally into this larger theme because it is another entity whose relationship with the player is unclear. #deltarune #gametheory #deltarunetomorrow #deltarunechapter5 #undertale
