@fisherzhangs_in_china: I love the life our family has built here in China—the rhythm of our days, the opportunities, the community. But beneath that gratitude, there’s a question that keeps surfacing: Is this really the right place for our children? I see so many students buckling under the weight of the education system here—the relentless pressure, the narrowing definition of success, the toll it takes on their sense of self. It’s hard not to wonder whether my kids will one day feel that same weight, and whether I’m doing them a disservice by letting them stay. My wife, who grew up in this system, sees it differently. She knows its demands from the inside—and yet she trusts that our children will be fine. Maybe because she herself emerged resilient, or because she believes we can buffer the pressures at home. But for me, coming from the UK where learning felt more exploratory and less high-stakes, the contrast is stark. It’s not that the British system is without flaws—it has plenty—but the difference in values around childhood, autonomy, and failure is profound. And that difference sits with me, quietly, most days. This isn’t about one system being right or wrong. It’s about the quiet tension of loving the life we’ve built while fearing the cost it might ask of our children—and not knowing yet which voice to trust. #china #family #chinalife #raisingkids #mixedfamily

If your children can grow up in a competitive environment, then in the future, no matter which country they go to, in what environment they are in, they will be competitive, and they can survive on their own

It’s good you are having conversations. Can you do distance education if you decide you don’t want to be part of the Chinese education system using the UK system while living in china? Then you could travel and still have time as you were talking about the extended days and hours he would be at school are very long.

I think parental pressure would be a bigger factor than the school, as long as you aren't adding extra pressure then what they do receive will be healthy

Kids are more resilient than we give them credit for. High expectations beget high performance. Eustress is necessary for motivation and well being.

Hi. If a chill school is what both of you and what Isaac want, so be it. Choose that school. China's education system has improved tremendously over the years. The upbringing from both of you right now, is amazing. No worries. Serious. PS: From an educator with multiple jobs and immediate family members in 3 distinct countries.

People talk about and use the word resilience as a positive outcome, but think about why it has to occur. Resilience comes because sometimes they're forced to endure it. Sure the education system creates resilient kids, but couldn't it also educate and create resilient kids in a different way

I was born in China and went to school there until grade 3, before my family moved to Canada. Meanwhile, my cousin who’s the same age as me has done all her schooling in China. Now that we’ve both graduated university, I think the overall pressure of the environment is definitely a big factor, but your kids’ personalities is also very important. I’m someone who naturally puts a lot of pressure on myself, so even in an easier education system, I was working probably just as hard as a student in China, day to night since high school. However, my cousin hates studying and doesn’t care about her grades at all, and at times it even seems like she had a more fun and “relaxed” experience than I did. This is obviously just my experience but it could be another perspective to consider!
