She was posing for her wedding video. Then everything changed. On August 4, 2020, 29-year-old bride Israa Seblani was standing in downtown Beirut wearing her beaded wedding gown while videographer Mahmoud Nakib filmed the celebration. Without warning, a deafening blast echoed across the city. A split second later, an enormous shockwave tore through the area, throwing her dress into the air, shattering nearby windows, and turning a joyful moment into chaos. The camera kept recording. About a mile away at the Port of Beirut, nearly 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded inside Warehouse 12. The material had been confiscated from the cargo ship MV Rhosus in 2014 and left stored under hazardous conditions for six years despite repeated warnings from officials about the danger. The explosion registered as a magnitude 3.3 seismic event and was heard as far away as Cyprus. It remains one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosions ever recorded. Within seconds, entire neighborhoods were devastated. At least 218 people lost their lives, more than 7,000 were injured, and around 300,000 residents were displaced from their homes. The disaster caused an estimated $15 billion in property damage. The footage of Israa standing in her wedding dress as the blast wave engulfed the scene became one of the most recognizable videos from the tragedy, capturing the exact instant an ordinary celebration turned into one of the worst disasters in Lebanon’s history. In the days that followed, widespread protests erupted across Beirut. Many blamed years of government negligence, corruption, and ignored safety warnings for allowing such a catastrophic explosion to happen. A dangerous stockpile sat untouched for six years. One wedding video captured the moment time finally ran out. Each video we post gets darker than the last. Follow for more ☠️🕊️
