I’ve worked in medicine for 10 years caring for patients. I now have RA at thirty. It makes me sick that we have to use specific verbiage and strategy to speak to a person who is supposed to have empathy and understanding to receive the same care that we give. I am very specific and educated to explain my experience and still am dismissed.

I had a doctor write 2 2 page letters to my family doctor after she diagnosed me with dysautonomia, Ehlers-Danlos, pots and mcas with all my other chronic pain stuff to advocate for me to increase my meds and she still didn't

I keep getting gabapentin prescribed. What are your thoughts on it for chronic pain? I’m taking 300 mg at bedtime and the morning. I know that’s a low dose. Is it worth continuing to go up on the dose? I have hEDS, most pain in hips and knees.

This is really good advice, but it is really bad that the patient has to communicate so eloquently to get help - and it is not always easy - especially if you are in pain

That should also work in reverse. I’m not very good with that kind of language plus I have a bad memory,I shouldn’t have to feel IM UP FOR ROLE IN A MOVIE to get adequate care, doctors should be well versed in all types of language barriers and help the patient explain what they are experiencing.im actually lucky and have a doctor that helps me communicate what I’m dealing with because he understands the language barriers.

I have to do in the doctor says they did write it down in the charts and that you did review it and they explain to you but they never did

I’ve had chronic pain of one form or another for 30 years. Multiple now from chronic pancreatitis to failed back surgeries. I’m so tired of it all.

I got told I was attention seeking because of my mental health disorders and because of my past with drug addiction. It took them years to give me an MRI. I got a phone call the same day telling me that I have four degenerative spinal conditions that will result in below waist paralysis. I still get treated like I’m in active addiction even with the diagnosises.

I started writing down questions, symptom changes, new symptoms, what treatments I've tried and the results. I use my list and take notes during my appt. Appt's are so short, this helps keep things moving and I don't forget anything! 📒🖊️👩🏼‍⚕️

I've learned this over time at 16 and my mom and doctors are always so surprised I'm specific, if I'm not I won't get treated properly

My GP is amazing ! I’m so thankful for her! Now my neurosurgeon’s office is a different story. They could care less if I’m in pain. I think this is why everyone needs a good GP who can bridge the gap in pain management.

I love how you explain the doctors appointment details. I wish I could express myself as well as you do ! I think my doctor gets a little frustrated with me for not being able to express my issue clearly., then I don’t get the proper care I need.

Great advice. I used to have PM Dr but long story short, I'm currently seeing only my NP, every time I see her, every 6 months, she brings another NP, I'm assuming, for training purposes. One time when she asked if it was ok, I said no bc it was very personal. My husband had just passed away. Now she comes in with yet another trainee & before I can say "no, I do mind" it's too late, the door is closed. I can't speak to her freely bc I know her response will be a hard No on anything I ask, even the way you presented here. Kind of off topic but I'm struggling with talking to her with only her, add a 2nd person & it's wasted time, again. I appreciate all your advice, ty
