In 1971, Bob Fosse learned through Harold Prince, director of the original Broadway production, that Cy Feuer was producing a film adaptation of Cabaret through ABC Pictures and Allied Artists. Feuer had cast Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles and Joel Grey (reprising his stage role) long before Fosse was attached to the project. Fosse was given the choice of using Grey as The Emcee, at the studio's insistence, or walking away from the production. He ultimately backed down on his "It's either me or Joel" threat, but relations between them were cool. Grey went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 45th Academy Awards, and a Tony Award for his original stage performance six years prior, making him one of only eleven people who have won both a Tony Award and an Academy Award for the same role.

Oliver Lane :
This is a strange production, despite looking exactly like the original 1966 production and was directed by Hal Prince, the script was edited and songs were changed. Yet this song is placed in between Sitting Pretty despite Prince disliking the 72 movie were does it make sense.
