But when someone already has atherosclerosis, carotid disease, prior stroke, aneurysm risk, diabetes, or significant cardiovascular history, refusing evidence-based prevention puts the brain at real risk. I’ve seen small, silent plaques rupture without warning — and the outcome can change someone’s life in seconds. Statins aren’t for everyone. They should always be personalized, monitored, and discussed with your doctor. But when they are indicated, they are one of the most powerful, well-studied tools we have to prevent the events I work so hard to treat. If you’ve been recommended a statin, don’t rely on fear or internet myths. Ask questions. Understand the science. Your brain — and your future — are worth that conversation. Save this for later, and share with someone who keeps postponing that discussion.
