Actually sounds like you’re handling with good grace and humour. I am sure you dad would have approved. Remember you have the upper hand because this will happen a lot to you but rarely to the person you are speaking to. Just give them an out, redirection, humour. As you get older it will be less awkward as everyone around you will be older and wiser.

If it's a conversation with someone you're not close to, I don't lie, but I'll deflect or move the conversation along. It's not really lying, moreso omission. I honestly don't like when random people try to offer their condolences when you tell them. Their reaction just seems so forced that I'd rather not deal with it.

both of my parents died about five years ago now. Best way I've found to avoid the awkwardness is to bring it up before them in passing and immediately move on to say something else. when they inevitably say oh I'm so sorry to hear that, just say, "I appreciate that, but yeah xyz..." about whatever you were talking about before. good luck!

the person should just say "oh I'm sorry bout that" and just go on with the conversation because it's unlikely that you want to talk about it every time you speak to someone

My default is always saying something like “my dad made homemade fishing lures before he passed and even sold them in big box stores” and when they say sorry about his passing, I reply something like “don’t be. He loved his job” to steer it away from death. Usually works most of the time
