@deepspacedocs: Mercury Explained ☀️ The Most Extreme Planet ☀️ Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun… but it might also be the strangest At first glance, Mercury seems simple, just a small, scorched rock orbiting dangerously close to the Sun. But when you look closer, it becomes one of the most extreme and mysterious worlds in the entire Solar System. Mercury experiences something almost impossible, a double sunrise. Because of its slow rotation and unique orbit, the Sun appears to rise, stop, move backwards, and then rise again in the sky. Despite being so close to the Sun, Mercury also contains water ice. Deep inside permanently shadowed craters at its poles, sunlight has never reached the surface. These regions have stayed frozen for billions of years, preserving ancient ice in one of the hottest environments imaginable. But the planet’s surface is also changing. Mercury is slowly shrinking. As its massive iron core cools, the entire planet contracts, creating enormous cliffs and ridges across its surface, some stretching for miles. This makes Mercury a world of extremes, heat and ice, motion and stillness, destruction and preservation, all at once. It’s a reminder that even the smallest planets can hold the biggest mysteries. #mercury #space #astronomy #solarsystem #planets #spacefacts #cosmos #science
