Mahmoud Darwish (1941–2008) was one of the most celebrated Arab poets of the modern era. He was born on March 13, 1941, in the village of al-Birwa, Palestine. During the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, his family left their village, which was later destroyed. This experience of displacement deeply influenced his poetry and became a central theme throughout his life. As a young man, Darwish began writing poems that expressed love for his homeland, identity, exile, and human dignity. His early works gained wide attention across the Arab world. He worked as a journalist and editor and became known for his powerful literary voice. Over the years, he published numerous poetry collections, including Leaves of Olives, Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone?, and Mural. Darwish lived in several countries, including Lebanon, Egypt, France, and Jordan, spending much of his life away from his homeland. Despite exile, he continued to write poetry that spoke to universal human experiences such as love, memory, hope, loss, and belonging. His style evolved from direct political expression to rich philosophical and lyrical reflections. He received many international literary awards and was widely regarded as the national poet of Palestine. His poems have been translated into dozens of languages and continue to inspire readers around the world. Mahmoud Darwish passed away on August 9, 2008, in Houston, Texas, USA, following complications from heart surgery. He was 67 years old. His legacy endures through his poetry, which remains a symbol of resilience, beauty, and the enduring search for home and meaning.
