@businessbagel: A Country Within 🇱🇸🇿🇦 Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa - but it was never absorbed. In the 1800s, King Moshoeshoe I placed it under British protection to avoid takeover, keeping it separate when the Union of South Africa formed. That decision ultimately led to Lesotho becoming an independent country in 1966.
Not to mention it fought many wars against the Boers and British and won

Lebitso (sobukwe's version) :
Also, those mountains saved them a lot. After the death of Moshoeshoe, the British went back on their word and wanted to hand Lesotho over to the Cape colony. The Basotho refused to pay tax to the Cape colony and they refused to be disarmed, this led to raids and the Basotho gun war where the Cape colony tried to invade and take over Lesotho by force but it was nearly impossible because of the region. All men had to become warriors again and guard their homes. Some villages were burned and looted. But similar to Iran, the mountainous region made it hard to fully invade Lesotho. The Basotho gained their independence and remain their own country to this day.

This is history from colonial lense, a more appropriate rendering is after a brutal European land invasion, Basotho King decides a better compromise to British colonialism and salvage what they could, instead of being subjugated to the boers.
