I had this conversation with my GM the other day. I don’t ask about gaps in resumes or multiple jobs in a year because I don’t see them as red flags. The candidates we’re interviewing are, in fact, people. Life happens, and that information doesn’t have any impact on whether I think they can do the job or not.

It’s worse if you started your own business after leaving, then applying for a job. The questions go from a gap to “why did your business fail”. It’s did fail, due to economic conditions business profits are barely covering expenses, the position I am interviewing for will help costs of living. Then you get hit with “we need availability around the clock you need to shutter that business to work for us…

The job I had until COVID closed permanently because the owner chose to sell during shut down. Despite the end date being listed as MARCH 2020, I still got people asking why that gap was there.

I quit my job and moved across the country for fun and because it was my dream to move here. I spent a year exploring in my new state. When I went searching for a new job a year later I just straight up told them why, a lot admired it and I got so many job offers.
