@danidazey: Exclusive breastfeeding…didn’t go as planned 🙃 What started as “I’m going to exclusively breastfeed” quickly turned into tears, stress, and a baby who almost had to be hospitalized. That’s when we made the call to combo feed 🍼 Now he’s getting about 70% breast milk (between nursing + pumping), but introducing formula honestly saved my body, my sanity, and probably kept us out of the hospital. Breastfeeding is beautiful, but wow is it rarely a linear journey. It’s emotional, unpredictable, and sometimes doesn’t look anything like what you imagined. Sharing this in hopes of normalizing all the paths it can take, because however you feed your baby, fed is best 🫶 Would love to hear your journeys too if you’re open to sharing ❤️ #breastfeedingjourney #combofeeding #newmom #fedisbest

Nipple shield saved my breastfeeding journey! Finally ditched it after a month and it went so great.

I have very small nipples too, and I met with multiple lactation consultants and nobody ever told me about a nipple shield. I was a first time mom and I had no clue about anything. So my breast-feeding journey was maybe only two or three months and it only consisted of me pumping because my son couldn’t latch because my nipples are so small. I wish somebody would’ve told me about a nipple shield so bad.

Absolutely do whatever you need to do to care for yourself and your baby! I had four children and breast fed 3 of them. My second born , who was born 13 months after my first, he just couldn't seem to latch on and was very fussy. I was so exhausted from just having a baby and a 13th month old that I made the decision to not nurse. He got fed and I got to keep my sanity!! Much peace and love to you and your family.

Same, same. I had to use a shield and some formula with all three of mine and it enabled us to successfully make it through to easy breastfeeding. When my second was born and we were immediately having the same challenges, I asked the lactation nurse for a shield. She said she would bring one the next day — but didn’t b/c she didn’t want me to use one. I was furious and sent my husband straight to the store to buy one b/c I was already suffering. 😡

I had a very similar experience to you and after months of trying to exclusively breastfeed and fluctuating weight, I've finally decided that combifeeding is right for us both and he's finally flourishing

My baby was born at 33 weeks and we mix formula with my breast milk to help him grow. My baby is currently sick and the nipple shield is helping him latch a bit more.

I never made enough milk. Same thing happened. I combo fed for the first 3 months. The goal is feed the baby and you did that!

I wanted to exclusively do breast milk , body couldn’t make enough plus he was not interested in latching on . He got formula and breast milk . Got where he needed to be and now he’s eating a lot of solids now .

This was 24 years ago …. but baby had a terrible time latching. At two weeks I was pumping amd wouldn’t even try breastfeeding some days. Guess what? At 8 weeks she was breast feeding exclusively. She ended up self weaning at only 20 weeks - GERD and terrible dairy allergy (from what I ate).

you are so lucky you had a proper LC. I did not and that's the only advice I ever give moms. AND DONT TAKE DECONGESTANTS. i did have shields but they were the wrong size!? and they contributed to my bleeding ripples. I cried every time he latched and he also chomped instead of sucking. when I did go to a pump nothing but blood came out first thing. it was so so hard. and it didn't need to be. but I also did formula and joined a milk community and just drove around socal and az collecting milk from mom's who didn't want theirs anymore. so so grateful for those women.

My son was in the nicu because he couldn’t control his inulin and I had to let them use donor milk since they were feeding him more than i could produce and in that whole mess I ended up with a nipple shield for the same reason 😅 I now pump enough to feed him so I try to do half the day pumping and half breastfeeding with the shield which none of that was according to plan but it works 😅

Wow your journey is SO similar to mine! My team called it power feeding - I had to breastfeed for at least 30 minutes, give formula, pump then give the pumped milk. And begin again 😅 I had an emergency c-section and baby girl also had jaundice. Definitely didn’t think this was in the cards for me, but hey we’re both healthy :)

Same issue with my first. I had to supplement feed with pumped milk for the first two weeks. It was nurse, supplement feed, pump, try to sleep for 45 minutes for two weeks. Almost broke me. We had to use the shield for 3 months. But we made it! And I’m here to tell you three year of nursing will fix those small nipples! 😂 Baby #2 had no issues at all, latched immediately.
