Rare to find a map that has Tahoe labeled as "Mountain Lake". That's how you know it's old. What's interesting is that it was named Lake Bigler in 1854, a year before this map was apparently made.

Salt Lake City actually was called Great Salt Lake City when it was originally founded and didn't drop the Great in the name until 1968. So the odd labelling could simply be due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake and the map maker not wanting to label Great Salt Lake twice. Snowy Mountains is also just a literal English translation of Sierra Nevada.

I'm from Cali! Afaik, when the Tulare lake dried up, our state became dangerously dehydrated, and we've been going through an on-and-off drought ever since. We also get a thing called Tulare fog, where the valley goes under a weeks-long fog cloud that keeps it at temperatures ranging from 36°-59° F (in my experience). I'd like to think it's nature's revenge lol

as someone who lives in that part of the world, mt. shasta is misspelled mt. shaste. i’m pretty sure it’s a typo since wikipedia says it was named shasta in 1842, though mt. mcloughlin which is nearby was called “Sasty” earlier so maybe someone got confused and tried to represent that pronunciation? idk i think it’s a typo
