Hard disagree from someone who renovates for a living. £154k profit from last 3 bed semi sale. I redecorated, new kitchen & bathrooms, flooring etc. 64 viewers over 2 days & bidding war.

I feel like this is a bit of personal bias given the industry you work in, if someone has money to use a designer they're probably buying more expensive homes and some cash to spare on making it "theirs". the lower end of home sales are probably gonna have to live with it for a while before they can redo things and so a bit of an update can increase value. also initial perception matters, otherwise why do people spend money getting their homes staged when new owners are just going to put in their own furniture.

I feel this so deeply - we’re renovating our next house based on the colour palette of our wedding pictures - it was a Lake District elopement so greens, browns etc I think if you base your house on something you love it can never go out of style. But I also viewed so many ‘house flips’ that were the same white washed walls grey toned laminate, grey carpets, white gloss bathroom etc I honestly think I’d preferred them decorated literally any other way as long as it had some sort of soul 😩

Couldn’t agree more! I bought my flat because I liked the layout and it had original features, but also it had a lot of room for improvement. I specifically scrolled past the listings with gutted rooms, white kitchens and grey vinyl floorboards. I want to put my own personality into the space I live in, and if I’m looking at older houses it’s because that’s the vibe I want for myself. If I’d wanted a grey and white space lacking personality I’d have gone for a newbuild.

i think there’s a balance. those with big budgets and multi million dollar homes can think like this. but those of us with homes under 500k have to walk a fine line between thinking about resale and your personal style!

Agree with this if the renovation is builder grade, white and grey, dull and boring. A decent property developer sells a lifestyle, and knows how to pitch it just right.

I completely agree. I bought a house that had been fully renovated and was turnkey which suited me at the time. Now, after 6 years of living in the space; I'm planning on making changes that will probably decrease the value rather than add: but I don't plan on moving anytime soon so I want to make the space function better for me and how I move around it - and I want colour!

It’s easy to say this BUT it’s worth noting that unless it’s your forever home that you’re looking to pasados. To your kids, do consider the resale value when you make renovation and design choices.

I want to renovate for fantasy value, but I do need to reign it in so I don’t lose my shirt eventually. Haha! I have champagne tastes on a water budget… put down the $1,800 bathroom taps and back away! 😅

I don’t know if I’m lazy, but twice I’ve picked the house that had the nice kitchen and a reasonable bathroom over the ones that had the grotty version of each, and I didn’t particularly change them

True! I feel like it’s about making each & every room a masterpiece. ‘Value’ is in such flux the business-minded should consider ceiling value rather than resale value.

I agree, if you are buying something to actually live in you should be decorating for you, not for the next person. That’s why we have this epidemic of boring houses on the market, basic renovations, white/cream/grey walls and no personality. It’s different if you are buying a house to flip and sell, but If living in it, make it yours

This! Not enough people talk about this! It’s my house, if I want a dark colour palette, dark wood flooring, and off white skirting, that is what I’ll have. I know you hate white skirting… but it’s not your house.
