I am Sicilian-American. I grew up thinking I understood Italian. I do not. I understand some dialect from a mountainous region in Sicily that no one else speaks. But my cooking is amazing.

It’s not federalism so no it’s not like a state in the US. They are admin divisions within the country. Obviously this division has considered the legacy of prior kingdoms or territorial independent governments before the unification of Italy. Only a very few have autonomy but it’s less autonomous than a state, just to say they have the same laws with slightly differences in admin stuff
