A report by Birthrights found Black women are disproportionately threatened with child services referrals, not for harm, but for asking questions, declining procedures, or challenging care. That’s not safeguarding. That’s control. This is what scholars call racialised surveillance, where Black motherhood is treated as inherently suspect. One woman was labelled “aggressive” in her medical notes for raising concerns. This is how systems respond when you know your rights. And it’s part of why Black women in the UK still face worse outcomes in childbirth. If you take one thing from this: Know your rights before you enter that system.
