@speakupedge: Want to be more persuasive when you speak? Here are three tips that instantly increase your influence - whether you’re in a meeting, a presentation, or an everyday conversation. 1. Start with a story. Stories grab attention faster than any statistic. One of my clients opened a quarterly meeting with: “Last Tuesday, our system went down for 14 minutes - and in those 14 minutes, we lost $42,000.” Phones went down. Heads lifted. The room locked in. Why it works: when we hear a story, the brain starts simulating the experience. That simulation makes people more emotionally open - and more willing to agree with your position. 2. Use clean structure. Persuasion collapses when ideas are messy. Keep it simple: Point → Evidence → Why it matters Example: - Point: Eating fast food every day has serious long‑term health consequences. - Evidence: The CDC reports that daily fast‑food eaters consume about 300 more calories per day. - Why it matters: That increases the risk of obesity and heart disease. When people understand the impact instantly, they’re more likely to be persuaded. Clean structure reduces mental effort - and low effort increases agreement. 3. Make them feel the impact. Logic informs us. Emotion moves us. One of my students didn’t just say, “We need better training.” She said: “Imagine how much calmer our new hires would feel if they actually knew what to expect on day one.” The room shifted. That’s persuasion. Neuroscience shows that emotion drives decision‑making - so if you want people to act, help them feel the outcome. If you want to be more persuasive, these three habits will change the way people listen to you. That’s the Speak Up Edge.
