Oil is also shelf stable for all of eternity. Delta can buy enormous quantities when prices are low, and refine their reserves when prices go up. Giving them a massive competitive edge in these scenarios

Before Delta purchased the refinery, jet fuel prices were very erratic for the entire industry. After Delta purchased the refinery jet fuel prices went down and stabilized. The purchase turned out to be good for the airline industry as a whole. Also, Delta’s refinery was engineered to produce double the amount of jet fuel per barrel of oil.
