The judge in the murder case against Charlie Kirk's accused killer blocked the public showing of a close-up video of the shooting during the first day of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing on Monday (July 6). Robinson's lawyer Kathy Nester objected "on the grounds that this video does in fact show a close-up view of the shooting of Mr. Kirk and grievous injuries in very stark relief, and because of that we are particularly concerned about our constitutional claims we have made, and our standing objection in terms of our ability to get a fair trial, if this is ... published." Prosecutor David Sturgill questioned David Hull, an agent with the Utah Department of Public Safety, about the video in direct-exam. Hull said "it's a graphic video" filmed from towards the front of the crowd, and it does depict the moment that Mr. Kirk is shot." "I am not going to authorize publication in the courtroom or obviously through media, but I will have it played on my screen," Judge Tony F. Graf Jr. said. The judge told the lawyers, "Please, counsel, given the graphic nature of it, please guard your screens, because I believe we all should be viewing this." "This is evidence, and I want to make sure that you all are seeing what I see to ensure that that is accurate, and it's a fair representation of the exhibit that you are familiar with," the judge said. Graf winced while viewing the video in the courtroom. Graf is a former city councilman in Toole, Utah, who earned his juris doctor at the University of Utah College of Law. He was a deputy prosecutor in Davis, Utah and Salt Lake counties before Utah Gov. Spencer Cox appointed him to the bench in the state's 4th Judicial District in May 2025. #law #court #crime
