Sir, I teach 7th grade ELA. Now, I’m good at my job, but the ball was dropped in the early grades. I should not be teaching capitalization, punctuation and sentence structure in 7th grade and yet here we are. 😭😭

My daughter’s English Comp 2 professor made them pick a topic, bring 3 printed out research articles, turn their outline and articles in after she met with them stapled together. Next class period she passed them back out and had them write the 5 paragraph essay in class and turn it in by the end of class. The next class, she handed them back and let them type it out and submit it in class. That was the first week. She wanted to see if they could write and how much they improved over the semester. She is phenomenal!! She has scheduled library time at the college and had the librarian work with them on how to research and pick a good article. I can’t say enough about the impact she has had (even though my daughter was a decent/strong writer). College kids are tough! Thank you for what you do!

Sophomore English here. All year we’ve made them hand write their essays in class and type the following day to combat the AI phenomenon so they progressively mature in critical thought and expression. It’s been hard but we made it through…..🤭😂🤭😂

It’s because we’ve embedded so much tech in schools that students aren’t getting practice. My 1st grade niece takes tests on a tablet. Schools are going paperless. And this is the unintended consequence.

State standards do not address handwriting. Standardized tests do not include handwriting. So, elementary schools don’t focus on handwriting anymore. Elementary teachers do not have the time to teach handwriting when they are trying to force first graders to read and do math that wasn’t taught to us for another school year, and the kids aren’t developmentally ready for because of state standards that were written by textbook companies and not teachers who actually understand child development. It all goes back to state mandated testing created by corporate textbook companies and state standards created by those same companies.

When Chromebooks were added to the classroom, our students started to suffer. I saw it first hand with my son.

Sadly, a lot of high schools don’t have students write papers anymore.

I think the switch happened when school districts went to 1:1 devices (Chromebook/tablet). I teach 8th grade now and for the last two years we haven’t used technology except for assessments and final drafts. We write every thing now.

I agree, it’s bad. Especially when you ask them to write a response to a topic of discussion and they respond with one sentence??? Or you would ask them to write a brief summary of a chapter. I had one student copy the whole chapter and submit it as their work. 😳

As a college instructor, I do assign some in-class work, but I ask them to use their laptops. I can’t read their handwritten work. 😔 I try to float around the room to reduce AI usage, but nothing is foolproof.
