@Chayse Burns: I think the quiet dog is the one in charge. He wasn’t asking permission, he was coming to get food, that’s why the growling dog sat first (show of submission) then when he realized his growling wasn’t working he got up and walked away.

So when I walk outside, I look at my dog, put my hands behind my back and stand dead still looking in front of me. My doberman would then do exactly as this last dog standing, shy away with the face and move slowly, because she knows who is in charge, however my doberman would not even attempt to touch the food unless I back away or invite her closer. The dog sitting is in charge here
