I used to totally agree with this until I found the artist that has done my last 3. When booking an appointment with him over messages/social media he asks for the concept. But when you get to the shop he sits down with you and takes all the time to draw out the tattoo. So together both of you build the tattoo. And it just creates such a genuine bond. He adds his touches and I add mine. He also does not charge for the time it takes to design.

About 2 weeks ago I scheduled a large spine piece that I want. The artist asked me to come in and I did. I've never had an artist ask me for a consultation. Since I'm spending $500 on this piece a appreciated it.

my first ever tattoo was no consultation. I sent him pics for reference weeks before the appointment. no mock up was done when I got there, I waited 30 minutes for a first draft, another 40 for a second draft and he seemed annoyed when I didn't like the first one. loved the second draft, it was perfect. but it felt like he didn't really care. my second tattoo, did the consultation, she had two designs later that night, I asked if we could combine the two. a week later I went in for my appointment, she had it ready to go, loved it. I love when the artist actually cares about the piece.

Agree I got a tattoo once without a consultation. I had hoped to seethe art prior. But On the day of the tattoo they put the stencil on and I was like yeah okay but expressed my concerns being black. They assured me they knew what they were doing and they didn’t shade black well at all. I now am getting a cover up in a week
