i know what she would ask me. i know the exact tone. i know she’d ask about ollie first because that’s who she was. she checked on everyone else before she ever let you check on her. she’d want to know if he was okay. if he was eating. if he was going on hikes or to the beach. and then she’d ask about me and her dad and her brothers but not in a way that let me downplay. she’d look at me with those eyes and say are you okay, and she wouldn’t move until she believed the answer. i know she’d want to know if she still mattered. if the thing she cared about most, helping people, was still happening somehow. if anyone remembered her and the love she gave so freely, if anyone was still paying attention. if her life meant something beyond the 20 years she got to live it. and i answer her. every single day i answer her. in the way i get up in the morning when everything in me says don’t. in the way i hold her dog against my chest and feel him breathe and think okay. okay. one more day. in the way i built something with her name on it (Ollie’s Angels Foundation) because she asked these questions and the only answer i had was to make sure the answers were always yes. she was 20. she was taken by an impaired and reckless driver. and she was already the person most people spend their whole lives trying to become. the one who showed up. the one who checked in. the one who made strangers feel like they belonged somewhere. her dog was the love of her life. she called him her angel. and now he’s mine. he’s ours. and together we answer her every single day. because the conversations didn’t end when she moved to Heaven. #grievingmother #childlossawareness #childlossgrief #uark #collegemom
