@bessbyers: While taking the ferry to my grandma’s ahead of my 39th birthday, it felt like a weird realization. The Seattle I knew and loved, the city I lived in for over five years, no longer exists. The businesses I frequented around Pioneer Square are gone. Blocks of 1st Avenue are boarded up. Empty office space is everywhere. I have a hunch things will get worse before they get better. Seattle, thanks for the memories. 🏙️ #seattle #seattletiktok #washington #ferry

As a 5th generation Seattleite who is raising children near downtown, this is so off base. I’m glad to be in a city that grows and evolves. Some people always complain about progress. I heard the same complaints in the 90s when I was growing up, about the era we now look back fondly on. The city is thriving but in different ways than you’re used to.

It’s such an odd feeling grieving a city we once knew. I know that tourists and recent transplants hype it up in its current state but, it used to be so much better! If only they knew.

What tf you talking about I work in downtown it’s amazing that they have re-done down by the water front. I feel comfortable finally bringing my 5 yo with me to the waterfront.

I have family in the rust belt, a part of the country that *actually* bottomed out, and however you feel about the changes that have occurred in Seattle over the last few years I promise you this is not what a dying city looks like lol

Seattle is happening right now in so many ways. It’s great to see it bounce back after Covid. Need to see the new waterfront redevelopment.

I used to cook in the city years ago. All the good restaurants and places I used to frequent are no longer there. Makes me sad.

I’m a Seattle native living in a different city, and I feel both your sentiment as well as curiosity for what survived, what changed, and what new things are thriving everytime I return which is 4-6 times a year. It’s still my favorite city in the US despite some of the harsh stuff that has happened. but like any big city, it’s evolving quickly. I will never stop loving Seattle.

The businesses are gone because the property value of the buildings is appreciating so fast the landlords no longer need tenants to profit, shops and restaurants can’t afford the rent if customers can afford their prices, less and less make enough to live here anymore…this is late stage capitalism.
