Hi tattooer here. Brown fades faster than ANY color pigment. It’s not that the ink is “blue black”that is just how black looks with our skin. Would not recommend any brown for longevity - if you want a less harsh look go with grey washes and softer styles.

Maybe it's just me or because I was raised around a bunch of old guys with tattoos, but I've always loved that traditional bluish faded look as the tattoos age.

Tattoo artist here. How you think brown will heal and how it will actually heal are two very different things. There is a reason why black ink is used as the foundation for tattooing. I understand you want a soft looking tattoo, but that’s done within the style and application not by a specific color

Hi! Tattooer of 15 years here. Brown is notorious for being one of the quickest colors to fade, along with a higher risk for patchiness. In addition, not all black inks heal and settle with a cool tone. I’m a Blackwork artist, and I’ve spent quite a few years experimenting with different black inks, and now that I’ve seen a fair share of them healed after about 5-10 years, I’ve found brands that heal quite true and neutral in the skin even with age. Obviously variables like your natural skin tone will play in to how black ink will heal in your skin as an individual, but there are pigments available that tend to heal less cool toned.

I love when a harsh black line fades to a bluish gray. To me it’s very soft and flattering…browns will have red or yellow pigments which age terribly over time with more touch ups needed. You made the right choice girl!

Tattoo apprentice and I asked my boss about this. She said it’s not how it works with brown. It actually fades to a green/yellow and it fades FAST!

It doesn’t fade to a nice natural brown. It fades to red and sometimes still a blueish color as UV eats warm tones first. Which is why black fades to a blue hue. (There’s not much warmth in black)
