Handling Axolotls: A Guide to Safe and Stress-Free Interaction Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are delicate, fully aquatic salamanders. They have soft, permeable skin and a cartilaginous skeleton, making them fragile. Handling should be minimal and only when necessary (e.g., transferring to a hospital tank, inspecting wounds, or moving to a new aquarium). Here’s how to do it safely. 1. When to Avoid Handling · Never handle for “fun” – they don’t enjoy it and stress can suppress their immune system. · Avoid handling during digestion (wait 24–48 hours after feeding) to prevent regurgitation. · Do not handle if your hands have lotion, soap, or sanitizer – these are toxic to axolotls. --- 2. Preparation · Wash hands thoroughly with hot water only – no soap – and rinse extremely well. · Wear powder-free, non-vinyl gloves (nitrile or latex) if possible – this protects their slime coat better than bare hands. · Have a soft container (plastic tub or specimen cup) filled with dechlorinated, temperature-matched tank water ready nearby. 3. The Safe Handling Method · Gently herd the axolotl into a soft net or large cup – avoid abrasive mesh nets that can damage gills. · If using hands, scoop from underneath – support the belly and tail with a flat palm. Never grab by the tail, limbs, or gills (they can drop limbs under extreme stress, though they regenerate). · Keep them submerged – axolotls breathe through gills and skin; air exposure dries out their slime coat. If you must lift them out, do it for less than 10 seconds and keep their body wet with tank water dripped over them. 4. During Handling · Move slowly and calmly – sudden movements cause startle responses. · Observe the skin – if it becomes pale, slimy, or the gills curl forward, that’s a sign of high stress. Return them to the tank immediately. 5. After Handling · Gently lower the container into the tank and let the axolotl swim out on its own – never tip or drop them. · Monitor for 24 hours: look for loss of appetite, floating, or skin redness (signs of stress or ammonia burn from handling). 6. Alternative: The “Container Method” For most transfers, simply coax the axolotl into a small plastic tub with tank water, then move the whole tub. This eliminates direct contact entirely – the safest option. Final Rule If you don’t absolutely need to touch them, don’t. Their slime coat is their first line of defense against infections – preserving it is far more important than any human interaction. With patience and respect, you can keep your axolotl healthy and stress-free for their 15-20 year lifespan. #Germany #France #Spain #Italy #canada_life🇨🇦
