"Iris" is the sweeping, emotionally monumental alternative rock power ballad that forever cemented the Goo Goo Dolls in the pantheon of 1990s music history. Originally written in 1998 for the soundtrack of the romantic fantasy film City of Angels—and later included on their multi-platinum album Dizzy Up the Girl—the track is a masterclass in acoustic-driven rock grandeur. Frontman Johnny Rzeznik wrote the song from the perspective of Nicolas Cage’s character in the film: an immortal angel who chooses to give up eternity just to experience the fleeting, messy, and painful reality of human touch and mortal love. Built around an unusual, resonant guitar tuning where most of the strings are tuned to D, the track swells from a delicate mandolin and acoustic intro into a soaring wall of orchestral strings and wailing slide guitars. It spent a staggering 18 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart and earned three Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The official music video, directed by Nancy Bardawil, captures the song's profound themes of longing and observation. It features the band performing inside a towering, industrial room overlooking the sprawling Los Angeles skyline through massive telescope lenses, intercut with cinematic footage from the film as Rzeznik drives through a deserted tunnel. Over two decades later, "Iris" remains the ultimate 90s rock love song—famously immortalized even further by the band's legendary 2004 live performance in a torrential Buffalo rainstorm. It is a timeless, cathartic anthem of vulnerability and devotion that commands a massive singalong the moment those opening acoustic chords ring out. #iris #googoodolls #90smusic
