If it hadn’t been for seeing videos of the curtain calls or megamixes then I wouldn’t have become aware of some shows. It’s great exposure, though nothing else should be recorded on the curtain call

For me I love being able to film a bit at the end (if shows allow it) because for me I can share on social media, show friends and use to show my grandad who loved shows but wasn’t able to make it to them any more, plus I hoped it would encourage others to go see it. What I think is wrong is when people are not following the theater etiquette, filming parts that aren’t mega mixes (which shows seem to now put on to allow the filming) or calling out in quiet parts like it’s a panto, or allowing their kids to run around! Or taking a photo with flash in shows like Cirque Du Soleil which allow photos through out (on most) but just ask no flash as distracts performers (understandably when there dangling 20/30 feet in the air with no net!!)

I personally, as a photographer, like using it to take photos of cast! I’ve had my photos used on posts and stories by swings announcing they’ll be playing a certain role that day and my photos have been used for goodbye to a show posts. I think it’s a good keepsake for both actors and audiences! Obviously, if there’s a policy against it for a certain show, I won’t do so, but I’m aware of many actors who are so so thankful of photos they get from their audiences

I would always respect what each show decides - if they say no pics/vids I won’t, but I do love being able to keep some pics/vids of bows etc. It’s such a nice memory to keep and look back on.

I got so into the comments on the insta post of this yesterday 😂 one actor said that they’re now standing on stage in silence because everybody’s filming and not applauding, which is a load of crap if you ask me, if nobody AT ALL is clapping, that’s a sign of the show… for all those that are filming, I still say there are a lot more who aren’t!

I do think it’s just the time we are in now and like you say a lot of shows encourage it now. I like to if I can but also I think people should respect if a show asks not to for example cabaret and now the greatest showman. When I went to see cabaret I enjoyed the fact I hadn’t seen much (although I had seen some sneaky videos/ photos on here!) x

my daughter loves to record the bows. she watches it back constantly and brings her joy. she will use her spare hand to 'clap' on another part of her body and will cheer as she would if she didn't record. 🤷🏻♀️

Filming during the show is a no go. But i do like to film during the curtain calls. I think its a really great memory. When I go with my friend sometimes she films and sometimes I do it. And I really keep coming back to it. Also its great if there's no chance for yourself to see it to actually be able to catch a glimpse.

I love filming the bows and curtain call at Titanique, especially since the actress playing Céline Dion encourages the audience to do so. And you get some great interactions from the cast during the curtain call too

I always completely respect what each show decides. But I do love when I can capture the moment at the end. I also feel like with the way the world is today it also can encourage others to go to the theatre. It’s essentially free promo for the show. If it’ll get more bums on seats I’m all for it 🫶🏼

A lot of shows make an announcement not to film and sing until the bows. If they say to do it in the announcements then go for it. I know whenever Jason Donovan is in a musical he encourages the bows/curtain call to be filmed so he can see it and his fans who can’t go to see the shows can get a taste

Maybe they could do a photo cast encore so they do the bows and then come bk out all together pose and ppl get their photos then and only then. Would mean they would get full applause

These curtain call videos act as a souvenir to people, not everyone can afford to visit theatre often and so these video act as a memory that they can go back go. They absolutely shouldn’t be banned.

Personally if they don’t tell me to get out my phone, I won’t, I’d only take a photo of the stage pre the show aka the curtain as a memory. If I’m allowed to take photos of them then even better but I respect if not :)

I can see both sides of the story, but unless they say you can film the bows I don’t. Half the time I don’t even get mines out because am enjoying and appreciating the bows. However I live in Scotland and probably will never see half the shows that are available in London unless they tour so it’s nice too see the bows

I feel like it’s a generational thing and it’s not going away. There’s a fair argument it breaks the moment for performers, but theatres and productions have clearly decided the promotional value outweighs that. Look at the social media accounts of any big production and you’ll see them sharing bows clips everywhere. Legally Blonde has even factored it into the show, building a shareable routine into the curtain call itself

When there are shows that actively encourage it then you can’t really ban it. If people see other people doing it at one show then they’re likely to want do it at other shows. Obviously you shouldn’t take photos or video during the show but I don’t see a problem doing it at the bows.
