My favorite fanfic au from Merlin is where Mordred defies his "destiny" (I'm not a big fan of the concept of destiny) and actually protects Arthur in the battle and then magic gets legalized and Merlin and him keep pranking the others using their magic and just have a special connection where they can communicate telepathically and use it to make fun of the others without them knowing😭

It kills me that there were multiple different paths that Merlin could have taken regarding Mordred that would have probably ended up saving Arthur. Merlin trying to change the future is what shaped it to be the future he tried so hard to change
