Please fill me in if I’m missing something. Why did a 5 year old preschooler need to be detained by ICE in Columbia Heights, Minnesota and then transported over 1,000 miles to a family detention center in San Antonio/Dilley, Texas? This child’s family had an active asylum case and no final deportation order. Local school officials say trusted adults were present and willing to take him. ICE disputes that.. fine. But even if you accept ICE’s version at face value, I’m still trying to understand: Why detention instead of care? Why Texas instead of literally any local option? Why is a terrified child treated like a logistical problem instead of a human being? If this is reasonable, lawful, and humane, please educate me on how this is okay. Because right now, all I see is a preschooler in custody and a family living in fear.
