On Wednesday, he announced that an advisory panel will consider whether to allow compounding pharmacies to manufacture certain peptides. Before Congress on Thursday, he argued, "peptides are like supplements... Supplements are not regulated in that way by the FDA. Peptides are not supposed to be regulated." Peptides — chains of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein — have surged in popularity, often marketed for anti-aging, recovery, and general health. But many of those claims remain untested, and some forms have not undergone clinical trials for safety or effectiveness, according to public health experts. Kennedy, who has called himself a “big fan” of peptides, has credited them with helping him recover from injuries. In 2023, the Biden-era FDA removed 19 peptides from a list of drugs the agency allowed compounding pharmacies to produce, saying they did not have proof of a safety signal. The Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee, which provides advice and recommendations to the FDA, will consider seven peptides in July and look at five more peptides by the end of February 2027. Kennedy has argued that expanding access through regulated compounding pharmacies could be safer than the current “black market,” where many products are sourced overseas with little oversight.
