I painted Chang’e moments before she ascended to the Moon from the sacrifice/ selfish pursuit of drinking the elixir of life that was meant to be shared with her husband. sybolism: In the chinese foldable screen at the back of Chang’e, there is foreshadowing of the future events about to take place. There, Change physically faces the moon (in the screen) which is her concequence from the elixir as she just drank which is her fate. this is accompanied by the rabbit to the right of the screen, who is her loyal companion who will soon be awaken when she floats to the moon. Her blue dress, hair and demeanour is as closely depicted from the ancient poems describing her character/ appearance. The blue dress shows her elegant, calm nature along with bravery from the sacrifice. #oilpainting #artreveal #moongoddess #caravaggio #painting
