This incredible episode of The Diary of a CEO with Dr. Gabor Maté is filled with useful tools and practices to assist you on your journey. It's no secret that the mind and body are connected. We know that what we think affects how we feel, and vice versa. But what about the heart and brain? How do they interact? Let's explore, here, the differences between the mind-body and the heart-brain connections, and how understanding them can help you on you! The Mind-Body Connection 🧠 The mind-body connection refers to the interconnectedness of our mind, body and spirit. What happens to one affects the other. This connection is thought to be a result of the communication between our nervous systems (heart and gut) and brain. For instance, when we experience physical discomfort, such as an injury or illness, it can directly affect our mental wellbeing and lead to feelings of fear, anxiety, hopelessness and/or sadness. Similarly, our mental and spiritual health directly correlate to what is happening within our bodies. The mind-body connection is important to understand, as it can help us to take better care of our overall health and well being by being more informed. The Heart-Brain Connection🫀 The heart-brain connection is similar to the mind-body connection, but with an added layer of complexity. Our hearts have their own intrinsic nervous system and is the source of our emotional intelligence, explaining that what we feel directly affects us mentally too. This connection is a result of the communication between our heart and brain via the nervous system. Our autonomic nervous systems are constantly taking in information from our environment and interpreting it. This information can be anything from the sight of a beautiful sunset to the smell of freshly cut grass. Our brains take this information from our bodies to create the response it deems most appropriate based on our own evidence, interpretation and experiences. Studies have shown that our heart rate, blood pressure and respiration can be affected by our emotional state. This means that when we are feeling emotionally overwhelmed, our heart rate can increase, our breathing can become shallow and our blood pressure can rise. By understanding the heart-brain connection, we can better manage our emotions and take steps to ensure we are meeting our own needs. Mindfulness, Meditation, Writing, Walking and Breath work are all great tools for self regulation. The Benefits of Understanding Connections📚 By being aware of the intricate relationship between our physical, spiritual and mental health, we can better understand how our bodies, hearts and minds work together and create space to facilitate care appropriate to all connections. By simply practicing paying attention, we can begin to identify cycles, recognise warning signs and take action to prevent or manage any issues that may surface. 💡💡💡 In the Science & Spirituality Podcast on Spotify, Hosts Chris & Kevin deep dive into Universal spiritual principles and also discuss, in detail, the body-mind connection. Explained beautifully in episode 173 is the connection between how we think and feel. The brothers talk about how 90% of information flow is from body to brain leaving just 10% brain to body. They explain how our hearts have their own intrinsic nervous system that functions independently to our minds.
