This happened to me! My mom’s autistic. I got screened for it 3x and only came back with ADHD. It was explained to me that my autistic traits were learned behavior

I HAVE A FRIEND LIKE THIS! They're incredible to be around! They know to ask specific clarifying questions, they get happy when I start info dumping, and they respond with their own noises when I'm making autism noises. They help me understand when I'm missing social cues.

this is my nephew's experience! my dad, my mum, my little sister and I are all on the spectrum and since we've lived with him nearly his whole life, he's picked up on our stims and behaviour. we actually thought he had it too until he went and got evaluated and turns out, he doesn't have anything going on, he's just learned the habits from us! it's so fascinating!

My constant question to myself is am I neurodivergent or did I just grow up in a household with neurodivergent people. I’ve never heard anyone else talk about this!

my psychologist believed I might be autistic for a while, we both reached the conclusion that I'm in fact not autistic, I just have a lot of traits due to my dad being autistic and raising us to follow his "social interaction guide"

Also growing up in trauma. Trauma and autism have a lot of overlapping traits/symptoms. I think this is why my autistic husband and I get each other. Somehow my trauma and his autism just work

I don’t have autistic family members but as an ADHD girl - I almost always kind of understand where yall are coming from and it makes understanding each other really easy in my experience.

As an Autistic CODA, I think it’s similar to being a CODA (Child of Deaf Adult/s).

As a social worker, I think the idea of being “culturally autistic” deserves way more attention. People who grow up in autistic households can naturally pick up certain communication styles, routines, and ways of processing the world - even if they themselves aren’t autistic. That environment shapes how they express themselves, connect with others, and navigate emotions. It doesn’t mean they are autistic, but it does mean their experiences are valid and worth understanding. This is such an important conversation to be having.
