This store is the LAST of its kind. Majority of the items here are from the 40s/50s, and you can see how the quality of vintage materials outweighs modern items in every way. Even simple wire is hand-wrapped in silk. This store used to have a mini factory in the back where they produced buckram hat bases, and what she has left in stock is some of the last in the world because that kind of buckram (starched cotton) isn't produced anymore It's really an honor to be able to go to this store while it is still around and learn in such a hands-on way. So much millinery knowledge has already been lost, and soon what was once taught by word of mouth will be gone. I love making my hats out of vintage materials because NOTHING modern compares to this level of craftsmanship and quality. Learning to make things by hand is undeniably one of the ways we can preserve history and humanity. If you go to this store, make sure to be respectful and careful with these items because they are truly some of the last to exist.

As a costumer, I could never source from a millinery shop selling birds knowing that millinery is the reason why so many birds are endangered and why we can’t even keep feathers we find on the ground now. I understand they’re vintage, but they should be in museums or those wall exhibits or fashion schools or otherwise used for educational purposes.

My great uncle was a hat maker in Connecticut in the early 1900s. I hope someone keeps this art alive and perhaps learns to craft a new age of millinery. ❤️
