it’s not recommended to have a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs as they can lean on it and potentially pop it out

Just a touch of unsolicited advice, pressure mounted gates aren't for the top of stairs. you really should get one that you drill into studs in the wall. I have used them for bottom of the stairs and room to room. They aren't as strong as they make you think.

If a gate is meant to prevent a fall down stairs or over a balcony, it needs to be screwed into a wall. The pressure mounted ones are meant to be used between rooms or something similar.
