Kirby Service Tech here. It is due to the fact that the cord isnt routed correctly on the handle, putting stress on the connection. Should be able to replace the cord and route it correctly and should be fine. Worst case you need a switch and a new fuse. This is why it is important to follow instructions ans get a check up on the machine at least every three years, preferably yearly.

Kirbys really are the best. My grandmother used to sell them back in the 70's and early 80's. She's 93 now and still to this day talks about how good they are. 🙂
